How long have you been volunteering at the theatre and what motivated you?
I have been volunteering at the theatre for 12 years. My motivation stems from my love of seeing children gain confidence and express themselves creatively onstage. There’s something incredibly rewarding about watching a child who might be shy or unsure flourish in the spotlight, gain self-assurance, and develop skills that will benefit them in all areas of life. Being a part of that transformation is what drives me to continue volunteering year after year.
What roles/tasks do you typically undertake as volunteer?
I typically assist with the overall coordination and logistics of the Litefooter Summer Youth Program at the Plaza, ensuring everything runs smoothly for both participants and staff. This includes organizing rehearsals, managing schedules, and coordinating with various departments to support the program’s success. In addition to this, I regularly work the box office for all of the shows at the Plaza. This role allows me to interact with patrons, manage ticket sales, and contribute to creating a welcoming and efficient experience for all our guests.
What are your most memorable experiences?
My most memorable experiences at the Plaza are those magical moments when I see the youth light up with excitement as they take the stage. Watching their enthusiasm and passion unfold during performances is incredibly rewarding. It’s especially memorable when, after all their hard work and dedication, they deliver an exceptional performance and receive the applause and recognition they deserve. These moments remind me of the impact the Litefooter Summer Youth Program has on their confidence and creativity, making all the effort worthwhile.
How has volunteering impacted your life?
Volunteering at the Plaza has had a profound impact on my life in so many wonderful ways. The friendships I’ve developed with the kids, their parents, and my fellow volunteers have enriched my life with a sense of community and belonging. It’s a joy to collaborate with such passionate and dedicated people who share a love for theater and the arts. Additionally, I cherish the opportunity to interact with the patrons who come to enjoy the shows. Their enthusiasm and support highlight the importance of what we do and remind me of the powerful role that theater plays in bringing people together. These interactions have not only expanded my social circle but also deepened my appreciation for the vibrant community at the Plaza.
Any advice to someone interested in volunteering?
My advice is simple—go for it! Getting involved is easy because the Plaza is great to welcome new volunteers and provide guidance on how to get started. Volunteering is incredibly rewarding, offering you the chance to make a positive impact while also gaining valuable experiences. You’ll meet wonderful people, form lasting friendships, and become part of a community working towards meaningful goals. I encourage you to give it a try—not only will you be helping others, but you’ll also find personal fulfillment and growth.
We are so grateful for Kay’s dedication and the incredible energy she brings to The Plaza Theatre. Her story is a reminder of the transformative power of volunteering and the importance of community support.
