For more than a decade, Karis Alvarez has been part of The Plaza Theatre family, first stepping onto the stage at just nine years old in 2013. As soon as she was old enough, she found another way to give back to the theatre she loved: volunteering!
Over the past seven or eight years, Karis has done a little bit of everything, from ushering and concessions to stage management, choreography, assistant directing, and costuming. Her passion for the arts and her willingness to lend a hand wherever she’s needed make her a wonderful example of the volunteer spirit that keeps The Plaza thriving.
We’re delighted to recognize Karis Alvarez as our Volunteer of the Month!
How long have I been involved at the Plaza Theatre and what motivated me?
I have been volunteering at the Plaza for at least seven or eight years! I believe the age you can start volunteering is 14, so I probably started around then. I have been participating in shows since I was 9, back in 2013, so when I found out about all the volunteer opportunities, I knew I had to jump in as soon as I was able! I love supporting the arts, especially my local theatre.
What roles/tasks do I typically undertake?
Usually, I usher, scan tickets, or help with concessions! I like to help wherever I am needed, though. I have also helped assistant direct and choreograph children’s shows, stage managed a couple of shows, assistant directed Deathtrap in 2024, and worked on costumes for a little over a year when I was employed at the Plaza!
Most Memorable Experiences:
It’s so hard to narrow them down, but I absolutely adore working with the kids during the summer. It’s wonderful to volunteer before shows and see all the people in our community come together to support the theatre, but helping young minds cultivate a love for the stage is such an honor and a blessing. Matilda Jr. was the first production I worked on with the kids, so I have to say that was my most memorable experience.
How has being involved with the Plaza Theatre impacted my life?
I have always loved volunteering, whether it is at church or the Plaza. I love giving my time and energy to something that I know uplifts and encourages people, and the theatre community is such a great place to experience and receive that encouragement. I adore my Plaza family, and volunteering here has encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone and get to know more people in my community than I could have ever imagined!
Advice to someone interested in volunteering:
I think everyone should find something they’re passionate about and give their time to it. There are so many communities and organizations that rely on volunteers, and it is so fulfilling to be a part of that. The best way to start is just to try it out! There are opportunities everywhere if you look for them!
Karis reminds us that volunteering is about so much more than filling a role. It’s about building relationships, encouraging others, and being part of something bigger than yourself. Her favorite memories of working with young performers, especially during Matilda Jr., reflect the lasting impact our volunteers have on the next generation of theatre lovers.
We’re so grateful for Karis and the years of time, talent, and heart she’s shared with The Plaza!

Whether you’re interested in greeting patrons, helping behind the scenes, or supporting our youth productions, we’d love to have you join us. No theatre experience is necessary, just a willingness to jump in and help make the magic happen!
