This month, we’re delighted to celebrate Jennifer Hubenak, whose warmth, dedication, and love for the arts have made her a cherished part of The Plaza Theatre family. What began as a way to support her children’s performances has grown into a decade-long journey of service, connection, and rediscovered passion. Jennifer embodies what makes The Plaza so special — community, creativity, and heart.

How long have you been volunteering at the theatre and what motivated you?
I’ve been volunteering at the theatre for about 10 years. It all started when my oldest son, Lincoln, was in a children’s play, and I helped out backstage. Four years ago, my daughter, Harper, began her own journey with The Plaza and has been in several shows. Through those experiences, we discovered just how wonderful The Plaza is — the local talent, the welcoming community, and the amazing opportunities it provides. What really motivates me is being able to share my love of the arts with my family and the community.

What roles or tasks do you typically undertake as a volunteer?
As a volunteer, I love helping backstage during the kids’ shows — it’s such a joy to see their excitement and nerves turn into pure happiness when they go on stage. But what I really love is working in the Box Office and serving as a ticket scanner. It’s so much fun to catch up with old friends, greet familiar faces, and welcome everyone to the theatre. Being part of that first impression for guests and helping create a friendly, inviting atmosphere is one of my favorite parts of volunteering.

What are your most memorable experiences?
One of my favorite memories at The Plaza was when my daughter, Harper, played Susan in White Christmas at just nine years old. She had a solo where she stood center stage, and although she had done well in rehearsals, she absolutely surprised us all during the performance. I was backstage watching the monitor when she suddenly sang with all her heart — using the catwalk, adding a little shimmy and even a wink! The ladies backstage started whispering about how she was really “bringing it,” and I’ll never forget that moment. It brought tears to my eyes to see how brave and confident she was up there — a true proud mama moment.

How has volunteering impacted your life?
Volunteering at The Plaza has truly rekindled my love for theatre. I was involved in theatre back in high school, but I’d forgotten just how much I loved it until I started volunteering again. There’s something so special about watching a show come to life and being part of the anticipation, joy, and laughter it brings to so many people. As a parent, it’s easy to get wrapped up in your kids’ activities, but volunteering at The Plaza has helped me reconnect with a part of myself I’d forgotten — one that brings me so much joy, creativity, and purpose.

It’s also become a wonderful way for my family to connect. Two of my three children have already been part of Plaza productions, and my youngest is planning to audition this summer. Sharing this experience together has been such a gift.

Any advice to someone interested in volunteering?
Whether you’re a seasoned thespian who loves the stage, a lifelong theatre patron, or someone just looking to try something new and meet great people, The Plaza welcomes everyone with open arms. It truly feels like a family. If you’re willing to share your time and enthusiasm, there’s a place for you here — whether that’s backstage, in the Box Office, or helping in countless other ways. Volunteering is such a rewarding experience, and honestly, the only regret you might have is not getting involved sooner.
