This month, we’re delighted to spotlight the musical talents and vibrant spirit of Debra Lemson! Debra has been sharing her gifts with the Plaza in “spurts,” as she puts it, but always with a heart full of music and a drive to lift others up. From playing piano and creating rehearsal tracks to stepping into the role of Music Director, Debra has become an essential part of our productions, helping singers and ensembles shine. Her passion for music and willingness to take bold steps of faith embody the very essence of community theatre.
How long have you been volunteering at the theatre and what motivated you?
I have been volunteering at the Plaza in spurts!! I love music and enjoy sharing these talents with others! I’m at a stage in life where I think about this a lot: “Use it, or lose it!” I definitely desire to share music with others as much as possible!
What roles/tasks do you typically undertake as volunteer?
I love to play piano and have done this in a couple of shows! I have grown to love being the Music Director for two shows! I also love making practice recordings for the various choral parts: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass. Additionally, I make recordings for any soloists that request these practice aids!
What are your most memorable experiences?
• I Love You! You’re Perfect! Now Change! This featured Plaza standouts, Rachel Helmick and Russell Kacer! S talent is “in-house” at the Plaza!
• The Music Man – directed by Janice McDonald, choreo by Sheila Taylor and Brooke Brun. There was an outstanding ensemble who worked diligently to bring this show to life! The marvelous choreography of Taylor and Brun made this musical really pop! The lead characters, Rachel H and The Plaza leadership made this introduction to Music Director one that I could grow into! Sometimes it just takes a step of faith!
• It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play was a joy to be the pianist for! It was especially exciting to take this Christmas movie classic to what it would have been like in 1946!
• 9 to 5: The Musical: This was a greater challenge in some ways than The Music Man! However, there was a “team-effort” that came from so many (singers, dancers, directors) that helped me to step up and deliver in rehearsals to learn this challenging score (especially putting it together with the performance soundtrack!) The calm leadership of Rachel Helmick and others has brought this brilliant musical to life!! I’ve never laughed as much or been as impressed with various levels of innovation as with this show!!
How has volunteering impacted your life?
I can be easy to fall into a RUT! However, for me it is more important to be more outgoing than to stay in the comfort zone! My involvement in these past two years has given me a fresh outlet that is very enjoyable! As the song goes, it makes things better if you Change It up!!!
Any advice to someone interested in volunteering?
The Plaza has lots of room for more volunteers! It could be at the snack bar, seating patrons, costuming, makeup, set construction, singing, acting, stage assistance! As Violet states in our current show, Just Do It! Take a bold step in this coming season!
Debra reminds us that volunteering at the Plaza isn’t just about filling a role — it’s about growth, joy, and connection. Her encouragement to “just do it” is a powerful invitation to anyone considering getting involved. Whether your talents lie in music, backstage work, or greeting audiences, there’s a place for you here. We’re incredibly grateful for Debra and the energy she brings to every project, proving once again that volunteers truly make the Plaza a place where community and creativity come alive.
