How long have you been volunteering at the theatre and what motivated you?
I guess you could say I’ve been volunteering since 2003 when director Marvin Albrecht took a chance on a theatre rookie and cast me as Mrs. Paroo in The Music Man. I had been a community volunteer in so many areas of my children’s lives for years, but now I was an “empty nester” and so was motivated to get involved in the theatre as something for me!
What roles or tasks do you typically undertake as a volunteer?
For over two decades of rehearsals and shows I could be found set painting, scrounging for costumes and props, backstage clean-up, occasional sewing, hosting (epic!) cast parties, and making sure the cast had freshly baked cookies for practice!
What are your most memorable experiences?
Probably the most fun I had in any show was Daddy’s Dyin’, Who’s Got the Will? I have never laughed so hard in my life! It also took me out of my comfort zone because I played the piano on stage as part of my role.
Another very memorable show was Singin’ in the Rain when tech wizard Mystan Gurkin actually made it rain on stage! Then it was “all hands on deck” during intermission mopping the floor before Act Two! I had a small role in that show, my daughter a larger one, and my one month old grandson (whose dad played the lead) danced in the arms of his mother during the finale, making three generations on stage!
Grease, Hairspray, Sound of Music (so happy Julie Aaronson made her debut in this show!), Oklahoma and Mama Mia were all fan favorites and a blast to be part of!
How has volunteering impacted your life?
I have never taken for granted the fact that I have been blessed with a wonderful life. I was fortunate that I was able to be a stay-at-home mom, so I always felt called to volunteer and give back…whether it be at church, the schools, or the community. Volunteering has always been about the camaraderie. You build life-long friendships and truly become a family. Our Plaza “family” has celebrated graduations, engagements, weddings, new babies and new grandkids—all because of the bonds we have formed.
Advice to someone interested in volunteering:
Just do it! Everyone both on and off the stage works hard, but it’s also the most fun you will ever have!
