What began as a mother supporting her daughter’s love for theatre quickly became a lifelong commitment for Sarah and her entire family. Over the years, she has contributed her talents across nearly every aspect of Plaza life, building not just productions, but lasting relationships and a thriving creative community. Her passion for dance, storytelling, and collaboration continues to leave a lasting impact on everyone who walks through our doors.
How long have you been volunteering at the theatre and what motivated you?
I began volunteering with Plaza more than 20 years ago. It all started when my daughter saw an ad in the local paper looking for children to audition for the upcoming production of Evita. She looked at me and said, “Mom, I have to go.” I began as a parent sitting through rehearsals, and before long our entire family was involved. That moment truly opened the door to a lifelong connection with the Plaza.
What roles or tasks do you typically undertake as a volunteer?
I first became involved by choreographing musicals for the Plaza. Over the years, I have served on the board in many capacities, including Membership Director, Board Secretary, Vice President of Production, and now Director of Technical Production.
In addition to leadership roles, I regularly volunteer in concessions, will call, as a scanner, and as an ambassador. For productions, I coordinate the technical team, assist with sourcing sound effects and music, and often create projections for shows. I’m grateful to contribute wherever I’m needed.
What are your most memorable experiences?
There are countless memorable moments from more than two decades with the Plaza. Some of the most meaningful have been volunteering alongside my husband and children, building friendships with people of all ages, and learning new skills in both dance and technical theatre.
One of my all-time favorite productions was White Christmas. I had the joy of co-directing with my dear friend, Katrese Skinner, and collaborating on choreography with my dance teacher, Sheila Taylor. We mounted the show in just six weeks with a phenomenal cast, and it remains an experience I cherish.
How has volunteering impacted your life?
Volunteering at the Plaza has enriched my life through the wonderful people I’ve had the privilege to meet. Theatre is a powerful creative outlet, and Plaza offers a place for everyone—onstage performers, dancers, technicians, and those who simply enjoy supporting behind the scenes.
My love of dance is what first brought me here, but I’ve learned so many skills I never expected to explore. This community has helped me grow both artistically and personally.
