This month, we’re excited to shine the spotlight on John Bieltz, one of the friendly faces you may have met at our Will Call desk. In just over a year, John has become a familiar presence at The Plaza, greeting guests with a warm smile, assisting with tickets, and serving as an ambassador for the theatre. His journey into volunteering began with supporting his wife’s stage roles, but it quickly grew into a passion for serving the community and making theatre-goers feel at home.
How long have you been volunteering at the theatre and what motivated you?
I have volunteered in almost every production since The Music Man. So, that puts me at a little over a year of volunteering. My wife being in the production and me attending each performance when she was in the production was the impetus for my volunteering.
What roles/tasks do you typically undertake as volunteer?
I have been an ambassador and a Will Call attendant. I like Will Call the best because I get to meet the people when handing them their tickets. I try to be as inviting as possible since I am one of their first interaction with the theater.
What are your most memorable experiences?
Interacting with the leads of the productions and getting to know them on a more personal level is memorable for me. Helping those people who come to the performances at the Will Call desk when they ask questions is another experience that I love. Watching my wife in a co-lead role in Ripcord was probably my most memorable experience because I was very involved in helping her learn her lines.
How has volunteering impacted your life?
Getting to know the people involved in the Plaza Theatre has helped me to be more open with others. I love meeting the people that come to the performances.
Any advice to someone interested in volunteering?
There is so much pleasure in meeting others in this setting. The Plaza Theatre is a treasure that we must keep operating. Any support we can give this institution is worth it. I know I will never be on stage, but helping by volunteering, I can still be a part of it.
We are so grateful for John’s commitment, warmth, and enthusiasm—he embodies what makes The Plaza Theatre such a special place. Volunteers like John ensure that every performance feels welcoming from the very first interaction. If you’ve ever thought about joining our volunteer family, now is the perfect time! From ushering to ticketing to helping backstage, there are so many ways to get involved. Interested? Reach out today and be part of the team that keeps the arts alive in Wharton.
