This month, we are thrilled to shine the spotlight on a longtime friend and incredible force behind the scenes at the Plaza — Charlene Baker! For nearly a decade, Charlene has brought warmth, dedication, and a can-do spirit to every production she’s touched. From her early days supporting her daughter in Litefooters to coordinating summer programming and welcoming patrons at Will Call with a smile, Charlene truly embodies the heart of community theatre.

Her journey is a beautiful example of how getting involved at the Plaza can blossom into lasting friendships, unforgettable memories, and a deep connection to the arts. Whether she’s helping backstage, greeting audiences, or cheering on young performers, Charlene brings joy and generosity to everything she does.

How long have you been volunteering at the theatre and what motivated you?

I have volunteered for nine years at the Plaza Theatre and have enjoyed every second of it. My daughter, Brodee, started the children’s plays (known as the Litefooters) when she was five years old. Bringing her to practices was my calling to help out wherever I could and to do whatever was needed to make the production awesome.

What roles/tasks do you typically undertake as volunteer?

The role that I take on now during the summers is being one of the co-program coordinators for the Litefooters plays with an awesome teammate and wonderful friend.

When I first began to volunteer I would help with snacks and costumes. I would also be an Ambassador (a person that passes out playbills to patrons and showing them to their seat). Being an Ambassador is a great way to get started because it is easy and fund and you get to mingle with the people. I have also done ticket scanning which I love but my favorite volunteer job would have to be working the Will Call.

I love greeting and interacting with everyone with a smile, giving them their tickets and telling them to enjoy the show!

What are your most memorable experiences?

My most memorable experiences would have to be, of course, seeing my daughter on stage (being that she has performed on since she was five years old) we have a lot of wonderful memories just by being at the Plaza with all the amazing talent, directors, choreographers, musicians and friends.

The theater atmosphere is contagious because you get to see children and adults in an element that love, and thrice at. The signing, dancing and acting all come together to make a magical show for everyone.

How has volunteering impacted your life?

Volunteering a the Plaza has had a profound and wonderful impact in so many ways. The friendships that I’ve developed over the years with the kids, their parents and my fellow volunteers have enriched my life greatly.

It has truly been a blessing to collaborate with such passionate and caring people that dedicate their time to share their love for theater and the arts.

I also enjoy interacting with patrons who come to enjoy the shows. They are always excited to see the awesome performances and the sense of community is always “SHINING” at the Plaza.

Any advice to someone interested in volunteering?

My advise to someone interested in volunteering would be this… Just do it! Once you start you will be hooked and want to continue. You will meet other volunteers and you will always feel welcome.

Volunteering is very rewarding, you will meet wonderful people, form lasting relationships, get a snack and watch a performance you will not forget.

We would love to have you join us at the Plaza – hope to see you there!

We’re so grateful for volunteers like Charlene who make the Plaza more than just a theatre — they make it a family. If you’ve ever considered getting involved, take her advice: “Just do it!” There’s a place for everyone here, and we’d love to welcome you into our volunteer community.
