Each month, we highlight one of the amazing volunteers who helps bring life, laughter, and talent to The Plaza Theatre. This July, we’re excited to introduce you to Alanna Huggins—music educator, performer, and joyful presence on and off stage. Get to know her story in her own words below!
How long have you been volunteering at the theatre and what motivated you?
I was the local Choir Director/Elementary Music Teacher for many years, so I’ve seen many of the Plaza’s productions. At the JH/HS, I was the Music Director of many musicals, but I hadn’t been actually been in a show myself since college. During most of 2020-2021, I spent battling a difficult health diagnosis. Treatments were physically and mentally draining. But once I began the road to recovery, I decided to embrace life, find my joy and do more activities I love. Near the top of my list was to audition for a show at the Plaza! My 1st show was White Christmas in December 2021. I was hooked!
What roles/tasks do you typically undertake as volunteer?
I have tried many different opportunities to volunteer at the Plaza…concessions, popcorn, box-office training. I enjoy being a part of the ensemble in the big summer musicals. This past Spring, I ventured into unknown territory and auditioned for a non-musical play! The TexFest competition play was a fun new experience. But as a Music Educator, my passion is developing a love of Music with our young ones and the Litefooter productions in the summer are exactly where I belong. This is my 4th summer to teach the music to our community’s rising stars.
What are your most memorable experiences?
My 1st show, White Christmas, was a magical time for me and I’m thankful to Sheila Taylor for encouraging me to audition for the show. Of course, musicals at the Plaza are my favorite times. I am truly quite content to be singing in the ensemble. Another great moment was in 2024, The Music Man. I portrayed the mayor’s wife, Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn and was able to explore my comedic side. Another cool part of the Plaza is Tap on Tuesdays. I was not a dancer while growing up and had never had a tap lesson. But pushing doubt aside, I got a pair of shoes and now I “tappity tap tap” along with dancers of all skill levels and no one minds that I have no idea what I’m doing.
How has volunteering impacted your life?
I’m a people person. I love meeting new people and catching up with longtime friends. The Plaza is the perfect place to do this along with creating great productions for the community.
Any advice to someone interested in volunteering?
Just do it!!! There is something here for everyone! If you are unsure, there is someone here at the Plaza willing to get you started.
Thank you, Alanna, for your heart, your humor, and your passion for sharing the magic of theatre with our community. We’re lucky to have you as part of the Plaza family!
