Wharton, TX – The spirit of the arts, community, and friendship was alive and glowing at The Plaza Theatre’s 2025 Lamplighter Gala, held on Saturday, March 1, at the Wharton Civic Center.
In an evening filled with heartfelt tributes, exquisite dining, and lively entertainment, The Plaza Theatre once again brought together its supporters, volunteers, and patrons to celebrate the individuals who have dedicated their time and passion to keeping the local arts scene thriving. Against a dazzling “Mardi Gras Masquerade” backdrop, guests gathered for a night of honor, remembrance, and joyous festivity.
Honoring a Legacy of Volunteerism: The Candyce Byrne Award
One of the most moving moments of the evening came with the presentation of the Candyce Byrne Award for Exceptional Volunteerism, awarded posthumously to two beloved figures in The Plaza Theatre family: Sandy Wilkins and Regena Bass. The award was presented by past recipients Quinn & Reagan Wrench, and their families accepted the award on their behalf in a ceremony that left many in attendance visibly moved.
Both Wilkins and Bass were not only devoted volunteers but also inseparable friends who, for years, worked tirelessly to support The Plaza’s productions. Wilkins, a longtime box office mainstay and Board Secretary, was known for her warm greetings and unwavering commitment to ensuring audiences felt welcome. Bass, a meticulous historian and ever-present concession stand volunteer, played a vital role in preserving the theatre’s rich history while ensuring guests had a memorable experience.
“They poured their hearts into this theater, creating an example that resonates as powerfully today as ever before,” said Quinn Wrench as she and Reagan presented the award.
Their names now join the legacy of Plaza volunteers who have made an indelible impact on the arts in Wharton.
A Star of the Stage and Behind the Scenes: The 2025 Lamplighter of the Year
The night’s highest honor, the Lamplighter of the Year Award, was presented by Henri-Ann Nortman, Board President, to Debbie Cenko, a longtime Plaza performer, Board Treasurer, and passionate advocate for the arts.
From her unforgettable roles in To Kill a Mockingbird, Little Shop of Horrors, and the Greater Tuna series, to the countless hours spent balancing budgets and serving drinks at the concession stand, Cenko’s contributions have been nothing short of transformative.
“This isn’t just about Debbie,” said Nortman. “Tonight is special because we’re also honoring the memory of her dear friends Sandy Wilkins and Regena Bass. These three remarkable women were inseparable not only in friendship but in their unwavering support for both our theater and the wider community.”
With a toast raised in her honor, Cenko graciously accepted the award, expressing her deep gratitude to The Plaza family that has meant so much to her over the years.
An Evening of Giving, Gratitude, and Grand Entertainment
The evening’s festivities were not just about honoring the past but also ensuring a bright future for The Plaza Theatre. Attendees participated in a silent auction featuring an array of exclusive items, a whiskey and wine pull, and a commemorative light-up glass raffle—all aimed at raising essential funds for the theatre’s continued success.
Adding to the evening’s energy was The Ziggy Band, one of Houston’s top high-energy party bands, who brought guests to their feet with a lively and unforgettable performance.
Looking Forward: The Future of The Plaza Theatre
With another successful Lamplighter Gala in the books, The Plaza Theatre now turns its focus to the future. The Renovate & Reimagine Campaign—highlighted during the evening by representatives from Ziegler Cooper Architects—aims to expand and enhance the historic theatre, ensuring its legacy continues for generations to come.
As the night drew to a close, the sentiment was clear: The Plaza Theatre is more than just a stage; it’s a community, a family, and a beacon of artistic excellence in Wharton.
